Stellar: A Duet for Piano and Cello

Stellar: A Duet for Piano and Cello

Sheet Music | Recording of Performance

For my music composition class Wired Ensemble, I wrote an original composition for the piano and cello. In the first section, the composition focuses on the development of a melody painted over a constant rhythmic motif. This melody lays heavily into the downbeat of the 250bpm 5/8 measures; the piano slowly builds in complexity, and the cello remains in a supporting role.

In the second section, the pulse given by the downbeat of the 5/8 measures remains, except it becomes the quarter note of the 2/4 measures. The rhythmic motif is gone, and in its place is a melody that swoops up and down the register of the cello. The piano regains control, and then explores a variation of this new melody. Commonality between the first and second sections, however, is not absent: the end of the first section (mm. 23-28) is echoed in the end of each phrase of the second section.

Finally, the third section returns to theme of the first section and fast 5/8 measures, except the original melody has been modified and the constant rhythmic motif seen in the first section is replaced with a new rhythmic motif. Again, the piano and cello switch roles, and the piano shoulders the outro with appregios.
